The pattern does include an alternate method for making the quilt without the ruler, but those directions are brief. We have made this quilt ourselves and strongly recommend using the Ovals All Ways Ruler - it makes the cutting much easier and the construction far more straightforward.

The pattern is difficult to follow - an extra page or two of instructions and diagrams would have helped greatly and not added much to the production cost. I bought the pattern after reading it did not require the ovals ruler, so was disappointed to see there is minimal direction if you do not have it.
I currently feel the $30-odd purchase was a total waste of money.
